This is an invitation for you to donate to the 2017 National Trust-St.Saviour's Cathedral Heritage Conservation Appeal Fund.
St.Saviour's Cathedral, the mother church of the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, is acknowledged as an outstanding example of gothic revival church architecture, and the brightest jewel in the brilliant crown of the great Colonial architect, Edmund Blacket.
We need further funds and dedicated work to restore and conserve this heritage gem for many generations to come.
In the past year, we have completed the first stage of the Cathedral's Conservation Management Plan. This was the first major work project completed since the building of the tower in 1988. Major drainge works had been undertaken around the building's perimeter to alleviate and prevent further destructive rising damp. As part of this work, external entrances have been rebuilt to allow easy access for people with disabilities.
The $440,000 cost of this first stage work by specialist engineers and stonemasons and overseen by the leading heritage architect, Michael Fox AM, has been met by donations to the Heritage Conservation Appeal, as well as grants from the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage and from Goulburn-Mulwaree Council.
An Asset Management Plan is being developed. the draft plan has identified remedial work on the roof and gutters to prevent 'falling damp' and urgent repairs to the Cathedral's ornately carved roof finials, crosses and parapets which have weathered and cracked over the past 133 years of exposure to Goulburn's sandstone-damaging climate. It is apparent that when the priorities and costs for this work are determined they will greatly exceed the $200,000 presently available in the National Trust-St.Saviour's Heritage Conservation Appeal Fund.
