2. ASCENSION CHAPEL

This chapel was established in recent years in the gallery, and incorporates the furnishings from the former Ascension Chapel at Bishopthorpe, Goulburn. The chapel is used primarily for private meditation.

On occasions, major services in the body of the cathedral, choral groups sing and trumpet fanfares
are played from this chapel. Access to the chapel, via newel stairs, is rather restricted. The newel stair is built on the medieval principal of keyhole shaped stone segments arranged in a spiral pattern. A similar newel staircase leads to the bell-ringing chamber in the tower.
